FAQs

What skills, interest, or experiences as relates to plants should the prime candidate have?

Although it’s helpful to have some knowledge related to plants and/or landscaping it’s not required. The ideal candidate would have an interest in learning and a willingness to fully participate in our training program.

What skills, interest, or experiences as relates to landscaping should one have to be a prime candidate?

We like to hire people with at least 6 months of experience. Experience using landscaping equipment is very helpful. We often have to retrain people because of standards or climate differences and are happy to do this if needed.

Are there mobility or other physical requirements for jobs at Shonnard's?

Garden Center associates should be able to be on their feet for most of the day, helping customers, watering plants (hoses are heavy), using the cash register, unloading trucks, etc. Lifting a heavier shrub or tree or loading soil into a customer’s vehicle is a daily part of the job.

Landscape associates should be able to bend, lift, and squat for long periods. Although we try to use as much equipment as possible to lighten the load, lifting pavers or wheelbarrows full of product is part of what we do daily.

Is there a pre-employment background check?

Yes, because you have access to company vehicles and customer’s homes, part of our process is doing a review of your driving record and a criminal background check.

What benefits are offered to full-time or part-time employees?

Full-time employees (over 30 hours) have access to participate in company sponsored medical, dental, and vision benefits. The company contributes 60-70% of the premium for enrolled employees. After one year of employment, most employees qualify for our 401k retirement plan. In addition, we offer a 30% employee discount.

Is there room to advance into management at Shonnard’s?

Yes! But you must be patient and willing to learn. It takes at least a year to learn the basics, so sometimes it’s not possible to develop into a leadership position until the foundation is established.

Does Shonnard’s offer internships?

We typically aren’t able to offer internships. This is because the training time for all our positions often is longer than an internship period. We occasionally are able to offer an internship to current employees.

What seasonal positions are available?

We occasionally offer seasonal positions for the nursery, usually starting in late February and wrapping up in mid June. These positions generally include watering plants, customer carryout, and cashiering.
