Why Choose a Small Houseplant?

A 2-inch Schefflera Plant Story from Andrea Shonnard

I can remember a couple of my first house plants, and one specifically comes to mind. A 2-inch Schefflera. This little plant talked to me. What it said, I don’t know – or how it looked was besides the point.

I knew I needed it.

At the time, I had only one other plant that was large and in a 6-inch pot. I really wanted to watch a plant grow, and learn what it needs.  To give a time stamp to this momentous opportunity, I got this 2-inch Schefflera plant when I was in 6th grade, and now 31 years later, it’s growing beautifully in an 8-inch pot.

Tips & Hints to Growing 2-inch Houseplants

When you start with a small plant, you really get to learn what it likes. Here are a few tips to caring for a plant that is growing in a 2-inch pot:

  1. Keep an eye on it. Watering is more crucial on a small plant as there isn’t much soil, and they do dry out quickly.
  2. There are a bounty of spaces to fit in a small houseplant! We can always seem to find space for a new plant, but because a 2-inch plant is so small, it’s very easy to justify the addition.
  3. With small houseplants, it’s easy to find a windowsill that gives just the right light. As 2-inch potted plants come in so many varieties, it makes it easy to choose a plant for your conditions.

Favorite Uses for Small Houseplants

  • Terrariums
  • Kokedama – sitting or hanging
  • Plank Mounts
  • Growing in cute small pots – 2-3 inches tall.

Watching a plant grow with you, and telling the stories of how it’s gotten to where it is today, is the reward many of us love. Once large enough, your 2-inch plant will grow into a show stopper, and maybe big enough to share a cutting with a friend!
