As fall officially begins and gardening slows, remember that the growing season doesn’t really end in western Oregon. Many plants are storing energy for spring growth, growing slow but steady, or even flowering through the fall and winter. Feed these plants to help them attain their full potential:
Fall and winter veggies such as broccoli, kale, and garlic are growing, trying to attain their harvest size – or enough size to pull through the winter successfully. Encourage continued growth with liquid organic fertilizer while temperatures are still high enough for a good response.
Fall is great for planting trees, shrubs, bulbs, and perennials. Feed these new plantings with a starter fertilizer, such as G&B Starter Fertilizer, (with plenty of phosphorus) to feed all the new roots that will continue to develop through the fall and winter. Strong roots now means better disease resistance and drought tolerance next year.
Fruit trees are best fed late summer to fall. Fertilize with a slow release organic fertilizer with plenty of nitrogen (such as Gardner and Bloome Citrus &Fruit Tree) to promote strong and healthy growth next spring.
Pansies and winter blooming hellebore need plenty of nutrition for growth and bud formation, but low winter soil temperatures slow fertilizer uptake from the soil. Feed them regularly – every couple of weeks – with a water soluble or liquid organic fertilizer to keep the blooms coming through the winter and into spring.
