Fun with Squash during Zucchini Festival 2009
What do you do with a 20-lb. zucchini? You bring it to Shonnard’s Nursery during Zucchini Festival, a weekend dedicated to the squash held in mid-September every year.
“I came up with the idea because pumpkins get all the credit, and zucchinis – everyone’s got tons of them!” says Chris Shonnard.
We’ve held this event for the past six years. It all starts at our Sprouts Garden Club for Kids when we give away zucchini starts in spring.
“We want kids to think about gardening as fun, and this is something fun,” Chris adds.
But entries aren’t just for kids. Zucchinis can be entered into several contests including biggest – the largest this year was 26 lbs. – strangest, and best dressed. The Shonnard’s staff votes on some entries and visitors to the nursery throughout the weekend vote on others.
Some of the top entries from 2009 (pictured here): Moby Zucc, the Great Green Whale, and Empress Zukini.
