Moby Zucc, the Great Green Whale entry in the Zucchini Festival held in September 2009 at Shonnard's Nursery, Florist and Landscape in Corvallis, OregonWhat do you do with a 20-lb. zucchini? You bring it to Shonnard’s Nursery during Zucchini Festival, a weekend dedicated to the squash held in mid-September every year.

“I came up with the idea because pumpkins get all the credit, and zucchinis – everyone’s got tons of them!” says Chris Shonnard.

Empress Zukini entry in the Zucchini Festival held in September 2009 at Shonnard's Nursery, Florist and Landscape in Corvallis, OregonWe’ve held this event for the past six years. It all starts at our Sprouts Garden Club for Kids when we give away zucchini starts in spring.

“We want kids to think about gardening as fun, and this is something fun,” Chris adds.

But entries aren’t just for kids. Zucchinis can be entered into several contests including biggest – the largest this year was 26 lbs. – strangest, and best dressed. The Shonnard’s staff votes on some entries and visitors to the nursery throughout the weekend vote on others.
