Water Gardening: Take the Plunge!

Water garden typical of a homeowner's pond; Shonnard's Nursery Florist Landscape in Corvallis, Oregon, can advise on care. It’s spring and pond owners are taking a look at their pond after the winter. Water gardening can sometimes be a mystery to even the most experienced pond lover.

We are pleased to have several display ponds and love to help homeowners build their own pond or give them a hand. Most owners have many questions and we’re pleased to have the most knowledgeable staff in Corvallis. I’ve gathered up the most common questions we get and asked Joel Shonnard, our pond consultant, to provide a few quick answers.

A. Usually every 2-4 years depending on debris load.

Q. Are there any safe water treatments that don’t have a lot of chemicals?
A. Yes, we use beneficial bacteria which colonize in the filter, gravel, and plant roots. The bacteria help breakdown nutrients and keep water clean.

Q. How many plants should I put in my pond?
A. The more plants the better. I recommend about 60-75% coverage planted directly into the gravel. 1 lb of good aquatic plant = 1lb less of algae
