First 'Gorilla Landscape' Project Complete

Share |

The camouflage Jeep that serves as the official vehicle for Shonnard’s Nursery, Florist and Landscape’s “Gorilla Landscape Division” rolled up to Gary and Shirley Irwin’s home on Country Club Drive Tuesday to get a lot of yard work done.

Gary Irwin was declared cancer-free after undergoing treatment for colon cancer this summer, but the couple’s yard was not attended to during that time.

“It was working on his inner landscaping and forgetting the rest!,” Shirley Irwin wrote in their application. “First there was chemotherapy and radiation. Then surgery and hospitalization. Right when we thought we were coming out of the woods he got a horrible infection that landed him back in the hospital for almost two weeks!

“He cannot lift more than 10 pounds and fatigues easily. I ran the mower a couple times over the summer but that’s about it. The lawn mower won’t start now and Gary can’t help me start it because of abdominal strain.”

The Irwins were selected as the first recipient of Shonnard’s free landscape overhaul and received a $1,000 makeover that included pruning, spreading mulch, reorganizing materials and disposing of debris. The Irwins’ lawn was mowed, edged, limed, and seeded. Shonnard’s also hung Christmas lights on the Irwins’ home and repaired their lawn mower.
